Scientifik - The Most Blunted LP http://www.sendspace.com/file/09n1cg
A few weeks ago we looked at Scientifik’s recently re-released gem ‘Criminal’. This week we’ve got Sci’s much more elusive ‘Most Blunted’ album. This record is a collection of demo songs Scientifik put together with the help of the Vinyl Reanimators team around 1992-1993. Thankfully, and unlike most other demo tape bootlegs floating around, the sound quality on this is pretty good and does not distract from the material.
According to the Reanimators’ DJ Shame, these songs were originally recorded on VR beats but for some reason were then remixed onto tracks made popular by other rappers of the time. Consequently, check the beat from Chi Ali’s ‘Step into My Room’ interpolated into the slamming safe sex anthem ‘Slicka Picka Upper’, Nas’s ‘Memory Lane’ flipped into the humorous ‘I Ain’t the Damn One’ etc. I’m not the hugest fan of recycling other people’s beats, but Scientifik definitely does all these tracks justice.
As much as I like ‘Criminal’, I think Scientifik comes off a bit nicer on the mic on these joints, his delivery sounds more relaxed and effortless. The subject matter here is more varied too, even if it ain’t groundbreaking. My favorite track ‘I Used to Know Ya’ with longtime associate Ed O.G. (the only guest spot on the record) features the two Bostonians trading stories about the hard it work it takes to get in the game and the inevitable lobsterheads who come calling once you make it.
No doubt these tracks would have languished in someone’s basement were it not for a mysterious entity calling itself ‘Don Corleone Entertainment’ who released the ten track album on wax around 2001. Reliable sources tell me that the people who put this out were the owners of the legendary Mr Bongo record store in London. I don’t know either way, but that’s where I copped my copy back in 2002 when I was living there (it was the last one in the rack). This shit now goes for crazy prices on eBay, and the revived interest in Sci due to the re-release of ‘Criminal’ is just more fuel to the fire. So for this is for all the broke cats like me: kick back and enjoy some classic east coast hip hop.
Polarity - with special thanks to Travis for uploading this for my busted ass.

The Begging Daughter

The daughter went a begging this weekend and a bunch of you came through. There was so much stuff shared this weekend in the c-box that I decided for myself and anyone you, God forbid, didn't check out the site this weekend could have a chance to catch on some of our requests that have been filled. I want to thank everyone that uploaded something, it's greatly apperciated!
NEW BLOGS
Before we do that though there are a few new blogs I added to the links page that need pointed out, since I happen to think they are pretty good.
Bump This
One of our frequent visitors to the site, Stagalicious, has thrown his hat into the ring and started up his own blog. Judging by some of the stuff he has shared on this site, I think he will add a great deal to the large amount of obscure/rare albums that are already out there. It's a site definately worth checking on a regular basis and bookmarking. Daughter approved!
Drop Da Bass
If you haven't notice yet, I'm big on orginality. I think it goes a long way. It's one reason I try to up albums that I don't see all that much. Well there is a blog that is a first of its kind that I know of. Fans of the Miami Bass/Booty music will be happy to know there is a blog dedicated to this genere, which is pretty cool IMO. It's a great idea and I hope it goes off well, because it's defintately something different.
Timbz N Hood Chek
I probably don't even need to mention this site, because any self righteous blog nerd should already know this site. Crooklyn, of the almighty Crooklyn's Classics has started a site dedicated to the new releases dropping, and there are going to be alot in the next few months leading up to the holiday season, there always is. So get your groove on and check his site for all the leaks, promos, and new retails.
and...I've mentioned this site before, but I'll mention it again.....
Bust The Facts
You're favorite blogs favorite blog. For those of us hip hop heads that are 30+ in age or even the young cats trying to get caught up on this history, this site dropping more obscure shit than an extinct dodo bird.

I'd like to thank eveyone who contributed, I was amazed at the response we got. This blog has really taken off in the past few months, all the way from a mere 50 visitors a day from Oct to July to pushing 500 a day now, so it's been kind of cool. We're not in it for "blog fame", just to help others out and well, to help ourselves, but I never expected that many links. Again a thanks goes out to each and every one of you....
Peace, Travis

Friday Night Specials: Request Friday
****True Culture link Updated*****
It's Friday night, ain't a damn thing funny......bitch betta have my money. Damn straight. I got stuck working today, mother nature said fuck the fall, You get summer then winter....BITCHES! Rain today and .....fucking snow tonight??!?! What the fuck is this shit?! Anyway, who gives a fuck, it's the weekend and what better way to kick off the weekend than to throw y'all some bones and up some of your requests that you've been so patientely waiting for.
Starting next week, I'm going to try to do a few more structured posts, get things back to moving normal once again. Next series is going to be.........I'm not sure yet, but something good. I like doing the requests, but I don't want this to become a strictly request blog, but with my limited time as of late, it's about all I have time for. Polarity, Brian and Phatsoul have some stuff they are getting ready to bless y'all with soon as well.
YZ - EP (Tuff City, 1991)
A1 When The Road Is Covered With Snow (4:09) A2 Taggin' It Up (3:16) A3 Thinking Of A Master Plan (Instrumental) (3:35) B1 Mixel Plic (Remix) (4:29) B2 Go YZ (0:41) B4 Crocodile Dundee (5:49)
I know next to nothing about this EP. Can't even really remember where I picked it up at, I think the cocaine blunts board. Anyway, some nice tracks on here, especially Crocodile Dundee.
YZ G.Rock - In Control Of Things EP (Tuff City, 1989)
A1 In Control Of Things (Vocal) (4:20) A2 Thinking Of A Master Plan (5:14) A3 I'm In The Party (Vocal) (4:37) B1 On A Friday (Hip Hop) (4:51) B2 On A Friday (House) (4:50) B3 On A Friday (House Instrumental) (4:51) B4 In Control Of Things (Instrumental) (3:54) B5 I'm In The Party (Instrumental) (4:40)
Another somewhat of a mystery album, I'm sure there are folks out there that can shed more light on this release more than I can. I do know you have some Tony D production going on on this release. YZ G. Rock was YZ and his dancer before he dropped the "G.Rock" from the name. If I remember right, it was more of a warm up to YZ's debut release "Sons Of the Father".....speaking of that release
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LYINCOBP (Both EP's are in the rar. file)
Recent interview w/ YZ http://www.platform8470.com/artists/ai_yz.asp
YZ's myspace page http://www.platform8470.com/artists/ai_yz.asp
YZ - Son's Of The Father
http://www.sendspace.com/file/53gqsn
A1 Intro And Sons Of The Father (5:20) A2 In Control Of Things (5:15) A3 Back Again (3:15) A4 I'm Workin' (5:14) A5 Get It Right (Put On Your Bally Shoes) (2:54) B1 Tower With The Power (3:38) B2 Spank-ed (4:20) B3 Who's That Girl (4:54) B4 Diss Fe Liar (2:39) B5 Thinking Of A Master Plan (5:54) B6 Outro (0:13)
A New Jersey classic. Not sure why, but I didn't care for this much when it orginally came out, but I soon saw the error of my ways
The Science Of Sound Demo EP http://www.sendspace.com/file/xtach7
1.“Track 1” MISSING- 2.“Who got the funk”- 3.“Stupid” CUT SHORT-4. “Get you lifted” -5. “No diggedy” -6. “Track 6” -7. “It ain’t safe”-8. “Track 8” -9. “M.C.’s I be burnin”
Everything I know about this group can be found on this vinyl addicts post. This is some dope ass shit. I was going to save this for a demo series, but since a loyal visitor requested it, I decided to share it now....Check out the the first track "Who Got The Funk" w/ Phife Dawg. Comparing this to what Vinyl Addicts, I'm missing a track and "Stupid" is only 10 seconds long. Andyman187 said he had a copy of this as well, if you have the missing tracks, can you up them for us? Thanks!
Sweet Tee - It's Tee Time (Profile Records, 1988)
http://www.uploading.com/files/GZHXZF1V/Sweet_Tee.rar.html
1 On The Smooth Tip (4:06) 2 Let's Dance (3:48) 3 I Got Da Feelin' (4:12) 4 Show And Prove (3:03) 5 Work Out (4:07) 6 It's My Beat (5:02) 7 As The Beat Goes On (3:33) 8 It's Like That Y'all (4:59) 9 Why Did It Have To Be Me (5:09)
As I've mentioned before, I was never big on female MC's from the first Golden Age, but "On The Smooth Tip" was always pretty tight
Seems everyone has a myspace page these days

Hot Day - It's My Turn (Tuff City, 1989) Various Artists
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YNBYHL8J
A1 It's My Turn Vocals - Arkim A2 Rhyme Complication Vocals - Prince Sugar Daddy A3 Hot Day's Groove A4 Hot Day's Burning Vocals - Arkim A5 Going Straight Up Vocals - Arkim , MC Cor , Mystique (3) , Shahid B1 Get Nifty Vocals - Mystique (3) B2 Sound Of The Drum Vocals - Arkim B3 Now Break B4 Put The Party In Full Effect B5 Hot Day's Turn
I fucking love this album. This is the essance of what late 80's hip hop was about. Hot Day is a forgotten Queens legend of sorts that did some early production for Intelligent Hoodlum aka Tragedy and also formed the group P.H.D. with MC Poet who would later be in Screwball. Grab this album!
45 King/Flavor Unit - 45 King Presents The Flavor Unit
http://www.sendspace.com/file/2pbv7h
01 The Flavor Unit - Flavor Unit Assassination Squad Featuring - Apache, Lakim Shabaz, Lord Alibaski, Double J, Queen Latifah 02 Lord Alibaski- Lyrics In Motion 03 Apache- I Feel Like Flowing 04 Lord Alibaski - Top Gun 05 Lakim Shabazz & Apache - Passin’ The Mike 06 Lord Alibaski - What It Takes To Be A Rapper 07 Lakim Shabazz - Hands Of Fate 08 Lord Alibaski - Crunch Time 09 Apache - Smooth Yet Hard
This is the ORGINAL Flavor Unit. Some nice tracks on here, a must have for any 45 King fans out there.
True Culture - Rude Boys Come To Play (Cardiac Records, 1992) http://www.sendspace.com/file/5sl6nx
1. Intro 2. Fakin' It 3. Annihilators 4. I Cry 5. The Massive 6. Keep It Goin' 7. It's So Good, It's Bad 8. Respect To 9. The Cult...The Culture 10. The Vibe 11. Rude Boys Come To Play 12. FCP Radio 13. Culture Come Again 14. The G 15. Trapped In A Bassline 16. Baby's Feelin' Hot
I'm just glad I'm the only one that remembers these cats. This was one of my personal favorites when I was younger. Listening to it now, and there are a handful of crappy tracks, but it's still has a few jewels on it, mainly "Fakin' It", "Annihilators", "It's So Good It's Bad" (I think there was a video on YO! for that), & "Rude Boys Come To Play".
I finally just picked it up again off of Amazon for cheap. Worth the $3-4 bucks I shelled out for it. Don't know much else about them and there is next to nothing about them on the internet.
Peanut Butter Wolf - My Vinyl Weights A Ton (Stones Throw, 1999)
1. Sit Down Shut Up 2. In Your Area 3. Styles Crew Flows Beats 4. Casio 5. Barter 6. Hold Up 7. Everliving 8. Rock Unorthodox 9. Top Illin 10. Necromancin 11. Keep on Rockin It 12. T Shirts - Peanut Butter Wolf, , 13. Breaks Em Down 14. Tale of Five Cities 15. Mr. Dibbs 16. Definition of Ill 17. Theme from a Peanut Butter Wolf 18. Run the Line 19. Phonies 20. Ten Minutes Left 21. Mobbin' 22. Competition Gets None 23. Interruptions 24. Hawaii 5000 http://rapidshare.de/files/34107282/Peanut_Butter_Wolf.rar.html
Didn't realize this little ditty was out of print and going for $30 + bucks on amazon, didn't bother checking Ebay....anyway, this was pretty much my first introduction to PBW and Stones Throw and this is one of my favorite albums of the pathetic late 90's. I still keep waiting for Planet Asia to drop an album that lives up to the hypness of his track on here.
Latryx - The Album
(Soleside, 1997) http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4MQRRT5H
1 Latyrx (5:45) 2 Say That (3:41) 3 The Quickening (The Wreckoning Part II) (5:02) 4 Balcony Beach (5:29) 5 Live At 90.3 '94 (1:25) 6 The Muzappers Mix: Aim For The Flickering Flame/Rankin' #1 (4:11) 7 Funky Granules (1:49) 8 Bad News (2:45) 9 Off [With] Their Heads (Be Prompt) (3:01) 10 Interlude (0:22) 11 Burnt Pride (6:51) 12 Scratchapella (0:24) 13 The Wreckoning (Live 45 Mix) (2:45) 14 Burning Hot In Cali On A Saturday Night (3:30)
Despite having a friend that loves this whole Solesides flavor, I've never understood the fascination with this stuff. But anyway, thanks to Mr. Newell, here it is.
UMC's - The Fruits Of Nature (Wild Pitch, 1991)
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MA8W9IK3
1. One To Grow On 2. Kraftworks 3. Morals 4. Blue Cheese 5. Swing It To the Area 6. Never Never Land 7. Jive Talk 8. Feelings 9. Any Way the Wind Blows 10. Pass It On w/ Kwazi & Prophet 11. Hey Here We Go 12. It's Gonna Last
I ain't gonna lie. I absolutely HATED this group when they dropped back in 91'. You got to remember I was a LL, Beastie Boys, Kane, Rakim kind of guy. I wanted hard beats, hard rhymes and none of this fairly tale fluffy bouncy bull shit. It wasn't until a year or so ago, my man Polarity sent me stuff and one of the albums was this one. Well I'm older and a little more open minded than I was at 18. I'll be damned if I didn't like this alubm this time around. It's a shame I kind of slept on it for so long. Anyway, Kool Kim has popped up writing occasionaly for Robbie and his Unkut site, and has managed to shed some light on some enteresting topics, including the Blastmaster KRS One and the whole PM Dawn tabacle and also on his own group and how they switched up from happy rap to some hard shit on the second album. He has also managed to generate a little conterversy over there as well, but some people are too up tight when their hero's get dissed. Good insight.
Extra Prolific - Like It Should Be (Jive
, 1994) http://www.megaupload.com/?d=50S918D1
1 Intro (0:41) Producer - Mike G (3) 2 Brown Sugar (3:22) Producer - Domino (3) 3 In Front Of The Kids (2:41) 4 Is It Right? (3:21) Producer - Domino (3) 5 Sweet Potato Pie (3:54) 6 Cash Money (1:28) Featuring - Casual 7 One Motion (2:59) 8 Never Changing (3:06) 9 First Sermon (3:27) 10 Now What (3:31) Featuring - Opio 11 It's Allright (2:44) 12 In 20 Minutes (3:11) 13 Go Back To School (3:12) Featuring - Pep Love 14 The Fat Outro (2:59) Producer - Casual
Why I never actually bought this album is beyond me. I really don't know. This was back when I would be anything that was even touched by Heiro. For some reason I never bought this though. Hell I never even heard it until I recieved it in the batch of albums I got in the foresaid post above. Now it's going for $63.00 on Amazon....wow....none the less great album, when Heiro still put out quality music.
Da Youngsta's - No Mercy (Atlantic, 1994) http://rapidshare.de/files/33675902/Da_Youngsta_s_-_No_Mercy__94_spooz.rar.html PASSWORD: spooz
1. Hip Hop Ride 2. Mad Props 3. No Mercy 4. Backstabbers 5. No More Hard Times 6. Put Me On 7. Stayed Away 8. Illy Filly Funk 9. Grim Reaper 10. Reality 11. In The City 12. People Round Town 13. What U Feel
I don't normally do this, but I'm growing impatient with doing this post, so I'm handing out the link that can be found on albumbase.
I want to thank those of you who upped stuff for other people, saves me time and helps the others out and thats the only reason I'm doing this blog is to help others since I've been helpled by a lot of people tracking stuff down. MC Eiht Ge-Ge-Geyeah!
What up what up?? Bringin that west coats flava to the masses.
Geyeah!!
On today's plate I have MC Eiht & Compton's Most Wanted. These guys are one of my favs. If you don't know who MC Eiht is first off you've been sleeping under a rock. This guy was one of the foundation of Compton rappers in the late 80's and early 90's. He made a guest spot in Menace II Society (how many of you forgot Too $hort was in there too?) as A-Wax, one of the hardest dudes in the hood. And his song on the soundtrack, Streiht Up Menace was the summer banger. Down load the remix here: Remix. While today Eiht is not on a major label, at my last recollection, he was on Koch, he has never sold out. he is still true, still rappin about the hood and keeping it real. I have included a mix of some nice remixes some rare some that I just like for you.
Compton's Most Wanted - "Growin Up In the Hood" (Remix):
Compton_s_Most_Wanted_-_Growin__Up_In_The_Hood__Remix_.mp3
Most people know about the beef between he and DJ Quik. MC Eiht took offense to something Quik said on an underground tape. Word has it that Eiht misunderstood what Quik said. Eiht was quick to jump the gun figuring it had to do with gang affiliation, Eiht's a Crip and Quik a Blood. Some bad blood spilled out from this on to wax. As evidenced on this next track Eiht didn't take shit for anyone:
Compton's Most Wanted - "Def Wish II" (DJ Premier Remix):
Compton_s_Most_Wanted_-_Def_Wish_II__DJ_Premier_Remix_.mp3
This tune was a cassette only track off CMW's first album "It's A Compton Thang" entitled "We Made It":

Here are 2 remixes of "Geez make the Hood Go Round" off of Eiht solo album

Finally a remix of Old Dirty Bastard with Eiht "Shimmy Shimmy Ya'll":
Ol_Dirty_Bastard__feat._MC_Eiht___E-40__-_Shimmy_Shimmy_Ya_ll__Remix_.mp3
In recent years, Eiht has put out a few less notable albums (Ol school gangsta heads would still like these albums) and he has 2 acclaimed albums with Spice 1 and also a duet album with Brotha Lynch Hung which is worth a listen IMO. He has also put out an album under the alias TOny Smallz. Here is a track with The Game:
MC_Eiht__Tony_Smallz___feat._The_Game__-_Don_t_Play.mp3
And most recently Compton's Most Wanted has put out a reunion album, so Eiht has been keeping busy. GEYEAH!!
The hard to find album- "Hood Arrest":
Hood Arrest
My next post I will bringing that Spice 1 gigity-gigity-gangasta to ya! Blawooo!

Friday's Fuck Ups Fixed & Visitors Requests
I've been holding on to these since this morning, hoping to find time to do the last Miami bass post with it. But, that ain't going to happen today with a Calculus test tomorrow and the Steelers playing tonight. One thing I would like to mention, please try to get any requests in for friday by at THE LATEST Friday morning (U.S. Time). It was partially my fault last week, because I didn't start uploading stuff until friday afternoon, but it was a bitch trying to get everything up by that night and the quality of the post suffered. Don't mean to be a dick, but with limited access to Hi-Speed (I know, broke muthafucka) and Friday nights prime time for anything other than being on a computer, I would just like to be able to have alot this shit pre-upped then do a fairly quick post that afternoon (a quick post for me is like an hour).
So get any requests in as soon as you can. Here is what I have in store already:
Sounds Of Science Demo (for Stag)
Peanut Butter Wolf - My Vinyl Weighs A Ton (for Balt)
YZ - Sons Of The Father (for Real) P.S. if you need any of his EP's, let me know, I have those as well
Latryx album (not familar with what he has out, I assume only one, but I did track it down) (for 4 Wheel)
UMC's - Fruits Of Nature (for Newell)
Extra Prolific - Like It SHould Be Done (for Newell)
True Culture - Rude Boys Come To Play (for RJ Franco On the cocaine Blunts board and I'll put it up here)
Also Polarity is sending the Scientifik and what he has in terms of the Hydra collection from the Southern Hemisphere this week. Probably won't be here in time for this week, but next week we should have something, which will probably have it's own special post because Polarity is cooking something for those.
if I'm missing anything let me know...between school and killing off brain cells at an alarming rate in my 20's, I forget stuff....
Peace, Travis

Slangin' The Goodies....Request Friday
UPDATE: True Mathematic link has been fixed
It's Friday and I'm stuck at work. Might as well make the most out of my time and upload some of your request from the past few days. I'm in no mood for bullshitin' so let's get right into it.
Nice & Smooth - Nice & Smooth (Fresh/Sleeping Bag Records, 1989)
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=41CK6M34
1 Early To Rise
2 Something I Can't Explain

9 Ooh Child
10 Hit Me
11 Gold
12 Dope Not Hype
13 Nice & Smooth
14 Dope On A Rope
15 Sum Pimped Out Shit
The debut classic from Greg Nice & Smooth B, produced by themselves. They were always pretty nice behind the boards in my opinion. Not my favorite by them, that would go to "Ain't A Damn Thing Changed", but still very dope indeed.
Kwest The Madd Ladd
- This Is My First Album (Def American, 1996) http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MRQ6K7KY
1. Everyone Always Said I Should Start My Album off With a Bang 2. 101 Things to Do While I'm With Your Girl 3. Disnexone 4. I Met My Baby at V.I.M. 5. Blase Blah (Off Tha Head) 6. Lubrication 7. Bludawnmeyesneekhuz (Through Tha Eyez of a Hood) 17. Damn 18. Say My Name Again
Funny enough, I never really all cared for this album. Sure it's funny, but to me he always came off as a poor man's Fatlip or something. I mean, it's alright, but it seems to get alot more acclaim that I always thought it should have. Found it for a couple bucks, so I scooped it up regardless.
Just Ice - Kool & Deadly (Fresh/Sleeping Bag Records, 1986)
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2T6Y3BS9
1 Going Way Back (5:01) Featuring - KRS One 2 The Original Gangster Of Hip Hop (5:28) 3 Freedom Of Speech (4:55) 4 Moshitup (4:58) 5 Kool & Deadly (6:32) 6 On The Strength (4:32) 7 Lyric Licking (3:30) 8 Booga Bandit Bitch (5:53)
One of the orginal Gangsters in Rap. I probably shouldn't have posted this since it just got re-released along with a good chunk of Sleeping Bag records dicography, but I've often wondered how much money the orginal artist see from re-issues. This is missing a track that is one the reissue. Produced mainly by KRS, it's a staple for any 80's hip hop fan.

Some of NBN's buddies. It's got that New Jerz flavor on it, not bad. In fact, if I remember right it's produced by NBN, which means, Kay Gee likely did the majority of the beats.

This wasn't as good as his first one, but there is some good shit on here. Joe Sinister, who appeared on Erick Sermon's first solo LP is one of my favorite artists that I know nothing about. Check out his joint "Under The Sun" on here. Also the Punk Barbarians are on 3-4 tracks as well, which are all pretty good. If you ever get a chance to check out their LP, I highly recommend it
The Best Of Notorious BIG Presented by Mister Cee
Andyman, I'm not sure if this is the one you want, the year I saw for it was 2000, but it's hard to tell with mixtapes. It's all his earlier works, I think the latest song on it is "Get Money" Remix with Junior Mafia....nothing else, here it is...

Here's a few goodies dropped some vistors (aka, I'm too fucking busy to make a real post) for those of you too freakin' lazy to check the comments. I didn't steal links that were orginally posted on other blogs, but there are some albums found on other blogs that have popped up here as well.

Listen To The Bass Go Boom: The History Of Miami Bass, Part Two "The Age Of The 2 Live Crew & Luke Skyywalker"

By the mid 80's, the South Florida area was starting to make the transistion from the electro sound that it had consumed the region in the early part of the decade. While the area can thank the likes of Amos Larkin, Billy Hines and Adrian Hines aka MC A.D.E. and the Double Dose group, the area had plenty of outside influences as
well. As mentioned alot can be traced back to Kraftwerk, who can be credited as a large influence to Afika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force. Bambaataa is often credited with starting the 808 sound with the single "Planet Rock" in 1982. In 1983, T La Rock's "It's Yours", which was produced by Rick Rubin, dropped. This song and other Rick Rubin produced goodies such as LL Cool J, Beastie Boys and Run DMC also would influence a New York producer named Mantronix, who would also contribute to the mid 80's 808 sound. Rubin and Mantronix along with Amos Larkin would weigh heavily in Miami's head first jump into the 808 sound. But one group from California of all places, and one man would set the whole Miami Bass scene jumping off. That group? The 2 Live Crew. The man? Luther Campbell.
Luther Campbell, also known as Luke Skyywalker during this time period, was a prominent DJ in the Ghetto Style DJ's, a crew of club DJ's during the mid 80's in Miami. Campbell was also a popular local promoter. He would break records during his sets and if they caught on in the clubs in Miami, he would get the artists to do shows, usually in the Miami club "Pac Jam". One of his first acts was T La Rock and Jazzy Jay.
In 1985,
a California group had a record that Luke was setting off in the clubs. The 2 Live Crew orginally met on an Air Force base in Riverside, California. Fresh Kid Ice, Mr. Mixx and Amazing V were the orginal memebers and released two singles in 84' & 85' on their own Fresh Beat records and distrubted by Macola. Luke would soon start pushing the "Revelation" b/w "2 Live" single in the Miami clubs and was bass influneced (I've never heard it, just going on what I've read). The group would go out to Miami in 85' to perform a show promoted by Luke, and would soon become a favorite in the south Florida area. Later, Amazing V would take a career in the military over a hip hop career and would be replaced with Brother Marquis, who was recommended by legendary So Cal artists, Rodney O.
By 1986, the group would take permenant residence in Miami, but before they moved they would
make "Throw That D", which would become a major hit in the Miami Bass circles. Luke would try to get the single pressed up by some Miami labels, but after no luck, Luke Skyywalker Records was born and the era of the 2 Live Crew as probably the most important group during the Miami Bass era. With the nortoriety the group gained with "Throw The D" with it's sexual content and adult humor and it's bass heavy music, dubbed "Ghetto Style". Their sound would help shift gears in the Miami Bass scene from the more electro bass sound to the straight "BOOM BOOM" uptempo type sound as others started trying to dupilicate thier sound.

Free For All Friday: Requests
It's still a few months until christmas, but WYDU has a bag full of goodies for you all. You asked, and if we had it, we came with it. So let's jump into shall we....
First Up, for thebridgeisover, hopefully this is covering the 12" single "The Ultimate Drive By" you were looking for from Success N Effect, with these three uploads by Brian. If anyone out there has their self titled debut, please hook us up. I've been searching high and low for that. This group was out of the ATL in the late 80's early 90's. The first album was more influenced from the bass sound, while the last two were more west coast sounding and political in nature.
Not exactly sure what this one is, I don't have it, so maybe Brian can drop some knowledge on this bad boy. From 1990?

Hopefully that's kind of what you are after. As far as an album it's self called "Ultimate Drive By", I couldn't find any info on an album by that name. As far as I know, they had their self titled debut then these other two. As I mentioned I'm not totally sure what the other zip is yet. Hopefully Brian kind shed some light on that.
Here's and oldie but goodie, requested by ZK, and upped by Brian in the cbox.

Here's an intereresting little joint, requested by Herman The German on Biff's site actually, but I've also seen him on here as well, so we'll go ahead and include it as well. Thirstin is one of you quinessential Brooklyn MC's, rough and rugged and infamous for his Lo-Life crew which had a dope series in The Source magazine back in the late 90's (I think) about how they used to shop lift Polo gear back in the day. I first heard Thirstin on the Soundbombing II album, with his "Brooklyn Hardrock" joint and really liked it. Found these two albums in a little mom and pop store while in Portland, Oregon and grabbed them. They aren't bad, some freestyles over pre-exsisting beats, but they are entertaining.

Things That Go BOOM: Miami Bass Part One
You know the feeling, your car rattling so damn bad that you can't see out your rear view mirror. You could feel it in your chest and in your gut. You would tie something on your mirror just to see how much you could get it to jump when the 808 kick drum hit. Little kids would run and hide when you came rolling down the block. Old men would shake their fist at you. Cops would pull you over just to tell you to turn it down. As the Masta himself would say in Jeep Ass Nigguh:
"Black boy, black boy, turn that shit down/You know that America don't wanna hear the sound/Of the bass drum jungle music/Go back to Afrika/Niguh, I'll arrest ya if you're holding up traffic/I'll be damned if I listen/So cops, save your breath and/Write antoher ticket if you have any left.."
Your trunk was useless with all the speaker equipment in it. A box with Twelve's or Fifteen's, an amp big enough that you needed two batteries to run it, if you didn't, your headlights would be dimming to the sound of the bass. Sure you could play your boom bap shit, but if you were like me in the late 80's and early 90's, the music of choice to get the trunk rattling was any Miami Bass artist that had the type of bass that could wake the dead with in a block when you rolled by. Miami Bass, that type of shit every cat had to show off his system.
History Lesson
Now, I'm definately not the one that should be doing this little write up. Yes, I was into the whole Miami Bass thing for a few years, 89'-91' or so, but I'm by no means an expert on the whole genre. Even then I was into the more accessable albums such as MC Shy D, Gucci Crew II, 2 Live and those type albums. Only the past year or so, I've been trying to catch up on some of the genre that I fogot, missed, or passed over back then, thanks to a lot of help from Tommy B of Miscreant Productions.
The Roots Of Miami Bass
The roots of the Miami Bass movement are very debatable and depending on what source you read, the genre could have had its start in a number of ways. The common perception is that you can trace the Miami Bass sound through the early days of electro grooves of Kraftwerk in the late 70's and Afrika Bambaataa and the Soulsonic Force in the early 80's. Kraftwerk was a german group that is kind of hard to put a label on, but they are credited with influencing a major portion of the NY music scene in the early 80's including Bam and his crew along with
George Clinton and the funk scene along with soul and dance music of the time as well.
The Miami bass sound's backbone is the high BPM's (beats per minute) and the Roland TR-808 drum machine. The first hip hop influenced song credited with using the 808 kick drum was Afrika Bambaata's monumental hit, "Planet Rock" that dropped in 82'. Rick Rubin & DJ Jazzy Jay would also feature the heavy bottomed kick drum on T La Rock's "It's Yours" in 83' along with Run DMC's "Together Forever (Krush Groove 4)". Rubin would go on to use this blueprint in many of the ealry Beastie Boys, LL Cool J and Run DMC productions in later albums. The sound started catching ahold around the country as producers/musicians such as NY's Mantronix, Miami's Amos Larkin, and the little known west coast group 2 Live Crew started to use this formula in their music in 84 & 85.
The Beginnings
South Florida was in the electro mix from the get go in the early 80's. Producers such as Pretty Tony, DXJ, Larry Dermer, Freddy Stonewall,Michael Sterling, Eugene Cooper, Noel Williams, Dwayne Omarr and the x-rated Clarence Reid aka "Blowfly" who would go on to serve as influence to 2 Live's x-rated lyrics. Which Miami artist is credited with first using the 808 in a song is debatable as well. It is thought Double Dose's "Commin' in Fresh" in 85' is often cited as the first Rap album to use the 808'. Miami legend, Amos Larkin produced the song, and by mistake used the 808 and after releasing a test copy to a select few, was convinced to keep the sound. It is said this was the blueprint for the Miami bass sound in the future.
Adrian Hines, son of label/record store owner Billy Hines is also said to have the first "true" bass record with his 12" Bass Rock Express also in 85'. Billy Hines ran 4-Sight Records out of his record shop which released regional rap and electro acts. For Adrain's sixteenth birthday, Billy Hines secured studio time for this son, who along with Amos Larkin, would produce "Bass Rock Express" under Adrian's MC moniker M.C. A.D.E. (Adrian Does Everything). It was styled closely "Planet Rock" and the electro style, but it's the first to reference the bass in the track and the title.
Coming Tomorrow: Luke Skyywalker & The 2 Live Crew and the penacle of the Bass Sound.
MC A.D.E. - How Much Can You Take (4-Sight Records, 1989)

01 Go A.D.E 02 How Much Can You Take 03 To The Fan's 04 Sex, Crime, Drugs 05 Hit Harder 06 Da 'Train 07 A.D.E. Got It Going On 08 Lyric Licking 09 Money Hounding Ho's 10 Physician 11 It's Crazy 12 Control
This album is my favorite of the genre. Hard hitting bass, possibly the hardest I've ever ran across (I never listened to those car audio joints, so those might have more) that would just roll so hard, but would be so clear. Maybe it was the way I had my system set up or something, but this was the CD I'd use to test out any car stereo. "Hit Harder" was my shit, but "Control", "How Much Can You Take", and "Da' Train" all had crazy crazy bass. Some of ther other tracks were traditional hip hop tracks, but still had that kick behind them.
I remember my best friends cousin was visting from Vegas and he played this for us. I fell in love with it. It was something that we couldn't find in my little ho-dunk town at the time, so I think I ended up trading him a 12 pack of beer (as seniors in high school, getting beer was a bit of a chore) for the CD itself. Somehow over the years I lost it, but it was pretty beat up anyway. I finally got the hook up from my man Tommy B over at Miscreant Productions. This is an ebay and amazon treasure with people paying around hundred bucks and more for the CD and wax versions.
Tomorrow (hopefully) part two of the Miami Bass history, part two in the album highlites. Also, I will be upping Vol 8 and 3 for the WYDU Classics for those of you asking about them. Peace, til tomorrow1
Travis
