I hate doing posts like this, rushed and hastily put together, but I hate going more than a few days without posting. Since I don't post anything on weekends much anymore and probably won't this weekend, I wanted to throw a last minute ditch together and toss a couple albums and cover a few "Old School" record labels.
Profile Records (Excuse the Wikipedia and discogs rip-off I'm strapped for time here)
Profile Records was at one time one of the premiere hip hop labels in the 80's, which they can mostly give thanks to Run DMC and their huge (and first) cross over appeal with the release of "Raising Hell". They would then go on to be a fairly major player in the hip hop business.
The label was originally known as Panorama Records until Cory Robbins and Steve Plotniki purchased the label from MCA. The two remained partners until '95 when Robbins bailed to create Robbins Entertainment, which if I remember right ended in a bit of a tussle between the former owners. The label would remain in business until '97 when Plotniki decided to sell the label. Arista BMG would acquire the label but ended up dumping most of the artists in the long run.

As far as hip hop acts, they had another huge crossover hit with Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock's "It Takes Two". They also released rap classics from DJ Quik, Special Ed, and Poor Righteous Teachers.
Here are two of the "lesser" known acts the released in the late '80's, both favorites of mine back then as well.
Sorry for the half-assed post, but it is what it is....have a safe and fun weekend.
1. Bullet From A Gun
2. Goodgroove
3. Power Move
4. Bad Young Brother
5. We Got The Juice
6. Def Beat Boy
7. All City
8. Rock The Beat
9. Human Time Bomb
10. Get Down
11. Success
12. It's Alright Now

Loved both of these albums when they came out especially Twin Hype!
i think twin hype was from jerz, no? too lazy to check.
how did you guys hear about (and like) derek b? i saw this record at the store for years, and noone ever bought the same effin' copy. EVER. and in only 1 record store in all my years of cd shopping!! i never knew what it was and always wondered who & why it was up there!?!
nice! good post! keep goin with the 'label' series! people like this BTF style!
Cool post! ! Derek B is probably the first rapper from England besides Slick Rick. And as far as Twin Hype. I loved the do it to the crowd video. The album was decent but nothing that matched the sheer creativity and energy of do it the crowd. Shameek lets house this crowd.
My favorite Twin Hype joint was "Nuthin' Can Save Ya". You've seen the Derek B LP cover on my blog as well. Good one.
One.
The amount of times that I've played 'Bullet From A Gun' and 'Bad Young Brother' from the Derek B album is ridiculous. EZ Q was one of the dopest UK rappers, only Kamanchi Sly of Hijack is better IMO.
Alley - Yeah, I think Twin Hype was from Jersey, want to say Newark. I heard about Derek B on "Yo!" way back in the day. I always liked the CD actually
Jr - Derek B was the first major one as far as I know. That Twin Hype video was the shit, we named a kid on my high school baseball team "Schameek" because of the video.
Bullant - EZ Q (aka Derek B) was the man, didn't he do all the MCing and DJing?
I thought about who was the rapper on Derek B after I posted. And I think Derek B was a two man group. On bad young brother he says something about him and his DJ being unstoppable. Anybody now for sure????
Hard to go wrong when you start out with Run DMC. I guess things always change, though.
Travis, Derek B was the DJ, EZ Q was the rapper. Nice combo, although they were always dissed by the underground in the U.K. for being too radio for the real scene.
Actually Derek B and EZQ where the same person! Love Rock the Beat. takes me back to my adolescence... that and TRANSFORMERS! Go see it! :)
sweet
Yeah.. i used to play that derek B album all the time. This one takes it back a bit. Reminds me of some stuff i havent thought about in a while
